The Oura Ring is a better sleep tracker than Fitbit/Google, and all of these are a lot better than the much cheaper Mi Band, or that is at least what this super interesting scientific study claims. In this video I want to discuss with you how the study tested this, what the results were, and what we can learn from this. We will also look at some of the limitations of the testing, and help you decide which sleep tracker is best for you!

The study I am talking about is a recent study published in the "Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation" in December of 2023. Researchers conducted a detailed analysis to evaluate the performance of five wearable sleep trackers, including Oura, Fitbit, and Mi Band, against the gold standard of sleep measurement: polysomnography. Now, Google owns Fitbit, and based on my testing I believe that all new Google products use the same sleep stage tracking as Fitbit products. In my testing the Oura Ring turns out to be a pretty good sleep stage tracker, and so do different Fitbit and Google products. If we look at the overall performance, the Oura Ring might actually be doing slightly better than all Fitbit devices on average, but the difference isn’t huge. The Mi Band on the other hand is a very bad sleep stage tracker in my hands, which means I would only use it for tracking my total time in bed, and nothing more. However, my testing is just done on me, which is quite limiting. This is precisely why it is really interesting that in the study I mentioned they actually tested the performance of these wearables on about 26 men and 34 women between 20-68 years old, so a much more diverse group of people. By the way, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral researcher specializing in biological data analysis. But back to the results, and I want to start off by looking at the cheapest device in their testing, the Mi Band 7.

The most suitable device for you depends on your specific needs and situation. Fitbit devices are generally already quite good, and one of the cheaper options out there that still provide decent quality sleep tracking. I used a Fitbit Charge 2 myself for many years, and this did the job most nights for me. You won’t get all metrics without a premium Fitbit subscription, but the most important ones are there for free. If you have more money to spend, an Oura Ring will likely give you slightly better performance, and Oura also has a great app, which provides the best health overview in my opinion. Which is why it is one of the devices I have been using myself for many years.
