After an open heart surgery, we often wonder if we can get back to normal again. And the answer is yes. But you have to be very patient and to have clearance from your doctor. You have to observe the precautions after you had an open heart surgery. We could start doing light exercises while being mindful of your heart rate. Occupational therapists will develop an exercise plan that is suitable for your current stage of recovery. So before doing these exercises, please consult your doctor and let a therapist guide you.

The first exercise is deep breathing. Put both hands on your belly. Inhale deeply while pushing your hand away with your belly. When you breathe out, push your hand toward your belly.

Next exercise is neck flexion and extension. Since after an open heart surgery we tend to become staff because we are trying to restrict a lot of movements, some of our joints also get tight. So it is a good idea to stretch and mobilize those areas. With neck flexion and extension, first looked down and then look up. Do this 10 times.

Third exercise is looking side to side. Look to the right and left as far as you can 10 times.

Fourth exercise is shoulder rolling. Bring your arms do your side, nice and relaxed.
Roll your shoulders backwards 10 times and forward 10 times.

Fifth exercise is trunk rotation. With your hands on your hips, move your hips in circles like doing the hula. Do this 10 times.

Sixth exercise is knee circles. Slightly bend your knees and Move them in circles 10 times.

Seventh exercise is shoulder circles. Bring your hands to your shoulders. You don’t have to touch your shoulders. Draw circles with your elbows 10 times.

Eighth exercise is sword drawing. Pretend like you’re drawing a sword And bringing it back to the scabbard. Do this 10 times.

Ninth exercise is elbow bending. Keep your elbows close to your waist Well bending your elbows 10 times.
