When dealing with patients suffering from reflux, heartburn, or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), addressing the underlying issue is important.

Herbal medicines, particularly the demulcent polysaccharide-rich herbs that form a protective gel when mixed with water can be helpful to provide relief from the symptoms of acid refluxing. These herbs can help soothe the esophageal lining, protecting it from the corrosive effects of stomach acid.

The primary herbs in focus for this herbal approach are marshmallow root, licorice, aloe vera, slippery elm, and even carob powder for children. These herbs are chosen for their mucous-forming and anti-inflammatory properties, which can provide immediate relief.

Dosage and timing are important when using these herbs. It's recommended to take them after meals and, if necessary, before bedtime, as symptoms often worsen after eating. Marshmallow root and slippery elm can be mixed with cold water and consumed after meals.

Licorice is beneficial, but it can help to opt for deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) to avoid potential side effects of a higher dose.

For children dealing with upper digestive issues, carob powder can be a surprising solution, though it's not suitable for individuals sensitive to FODMAPs.

In addition to herbal remedies, zinc carnosine shows promise in healing and soothing the gastric lining.

Ultimately, by starting with herbal remedies that offer symptomatic relief, patients can better prepare themselves for tackling the root causes of their reflux issues. This holistic approach, combined with the guidance of a healthcare professional, can lead to more sustainable, long-term solutions for gastroesophageal problems.
