For a thousand years, Christianity had a standard explanation for "the Incarnation," until a medieval monk named Saint Anselm reframed it as we understand it today.

God incarnated himself in Jesus so that we could be saved from sin and find eternal life---but that doesn't really tell us why he had to be incarnated. Those were ends, but why was in the incarnation the means? Wasn't there another way to accomplish those goals?
