Did medieval monks run away from the world, or more deeply into it? The Catholic monastic life tried to turn down the noise of human society, to immerse themselves in the created order, so that they could participate more deeply in the life and rhythms of the natural (and supernatural) worlds. They didn't run away from the world, they walked toward God.
