Prepare Your Plumbing for Spring & Summer

Getting your home ready for spring means more than throwing open the windows for some fresh air and giving everything a thorough cleaning. Did you know that your plumbing also needs attention in the spring?

Plumbing is one of those systems that we tend not to fully appreciate until it isn’t working. So taking the time to see how your plumbing fared the winter and prepare it for the heat of the seasons to come will go a long way toward avoiding potential problems.

Post-Winter Plumbing Inspection
It’s always a good idea to check your plumbing systems to ensure that everything made it through the winter in good condition. Even though we don’t typically experience severely cold temperatures, your plumbing can still experience wear and tear during the colder months. These are the areas to check:

Sump Pump
If you have a sump pump, you probably don’t think about it -- unless there’s a problem. And when there’s a problem, there’s usually a big problem, like a flooded basement. That’s why it’s important to give your sump pump a visual inspection every few months. Take a look at the drain that leads to the outside of your home and remove anything that could be blocking it.
Check that the pump itself has not tilted or that the float valve has moved.
Visually inspect the electrical wires and battery, looking to see if anything appears to be damaged.

If anything looks suspicious, you don’t have to attempt to repair it yourself. This is a good time to give us a call and let us know what you see, and we can determine the next steps.

Exposed Pipes
Take a walk around the perimeter of your home, looking for any exposed pipes. Pipes that are not insulated are subject to freezing, which causes the water to expand and potentially crack the pipes.
