Piriformis syndrome can be, well, a real pain in the backside. This deep glute pain can also press on the sciatic nerve and cause feelings of pain, numbness, and/or tingling that run down the back of your leg.

It’s crucial to note - most sciatic nerve pain (up to 85%) actually comes from the lower back itself, however in my professional experience I’ve learned that performing the stretches and exercises in this video for your piriformis can also offer significant relief.

WHAT IS PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME?
Your piriformis is one of the muscles in your hip that sits deep to your gluteus maximus and rotates your hip (think like pointing your toes out to the side).

Occasionally this muscle can get inflamed, irritated, or tight and “pinch down” on the sciatic nerve that runs right under it. When this happens, feelings of pain, numbness, and/or tingling can be felt in the glute itself or traveling down the back of the leg.

PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME CAUSES
The main causes of piriformis syndrome include sitting for long periods of time, sitting on a wallet or uneven surface, sitting with your legs crossed, pregnancy, and muscle weakness.

Essentially anything that puts stress on the piriformis muscle can cause this irritation and pain.

HOW TO TREAT PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
The most effective treatment for piriformis syndrome is a 3-fold approach including mobilization, stretching, and strengthening. The combination of these three things promotes muscle relaxation, muscle elongation, and muscle strength to eliminate the pain now and help you stay pain-free for longer.

Below you will find the time stamps for each exercise and technique demonstrated in this video. I hope they help you to feel better…
