EV sales have been rising in all markets but what effect is that having on the number of petrol and diesel cars on our roads? In mature markets like France, UK and Germany most people who want a car already have one, so these markets only grow slowly, if at all. New car sales numbers are not much greater than the number of cars being scrapped...and 99% of cars being scrapped are not EVs, PHEVs or HEVs, they are petrol and diesel burners. In this video I dive into the sales and car population data in France in an effort to understand if the number of cars being scrapped is exceeding the number of new petrol and diesel cars coming onto the roads, when that started to happen and to what extent it is happening. Well, it is happening faster than people think! In the period 2020 to 2023 the number of petrol and diesel burners on French roads has shrunk by 2.8 million, and this trend is gathering pace.
