Gallbladder stones are a prevalent issue, often manifesting as stomach pain, which is now increasingly seen in the younger population as well. Dr Abhinav Gupta, a Consultant in Gastroenterology (Medical) at Narayana Hospital, Jaipur, discusses this common yet potentially serious condition.
Traditionally, gallbladder stones were most frequently diagnosed in women, particularly those who were overweight and over the age of forty. However, changes in diet and lifestyle have led to a noticeable increase in cases among younger adults, including those in their twenties. The primary concern with gallbladder stones is the severe pain they cause, which is often the first symptom noticed by patients.
If left untreated, these stones can lead to more severe conditions, such as gallbladder cancer. Additionally, there is a risk of stones migrating to the common bile duct, the pathway that leads to the intestines, which can cause jaundice and yellowing of the skin and eyes due to blocked bile flow.
The preferred treatment for symptomatic gallbladder stones is through a procedure called ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography), performed under general anaesthesia. This method helps remove stones, alleviates pain, and prevents further complications.
Dr Gupta emphasises the importance of early treatment of gallbladder stones to ensure complete and swift recovery, highlighting the effectiveness of current therapies in managing the condition and preventing serious health issues.
