Tonsillitis is an infection in the tonsils, which may be viral or bacterial. The two lymph nodes are located on each side of the back of your throat. The virus causing tonsillitis are Epstein-Barr virus, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, and coronavirus. Viral tonsillitis has low virulence and rarely leads to complications. Bacterial infections are typically due to group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus (GABHS).
