If you need maximum cargo space without spending a fortune, the Skoda Superb Estate should be at the top of your shopping list. With a cavernous 690-liter boot, it puts every mainstream mid-size estate to shame, including pricier alternatives like the BMW 3 Series Touring and Audi A4 Avant. The only car that can match it for sheer load-lugging capacity is the mechanically identical Volkswagen Passat Estate.

But just because it's an affordable mainstream offering doesn't mean the Superb compromises on style or quality. Quite the opposite, in fact - the interior design is smart, with a layered dashboard, textured plastics, and classy aluminum-look trim providing an upscale ambiance. You sit in front of a reconfigurable digital instrument display, while the large 13.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is slick and responsive, incorporating wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Skoda's attention to detail is impressive too, like the cooled wireless charging pad, grippy cupholders that allow one-handed operation, and the clever 'sleep package' option that folds headrest wings out to support your head when napping in the back. Those rear accommodations are suitably spacious for tall adults too, although the raised central seat cushion makes life uncomfortable for a third passenger.

Under the hood, there's a choice of three 2.0-liter engines for now, including a 150hp gasoline, a 150hp diesel, and a 193hp diesel with all-wheel drive - the latter being the priciest option. A plug-in hybrid is on the way, promising an electric range of 62 miles and low company car tax bills.

We've yet to experience how the Superb Estate drives, but given how accomplished its predecessor was, we're expecting impressive comfort and refinement. Its massive cargo capacity will likely trump any dynamic shortcomings for most buyers anyway.

While it may not have the badge cachet of premium German rivals, the Superb makes a compelling case with its tremendous versatility and value proposition. With competitive pricing, a quality feel inside, and that simply enormous boot, Skoda's load-lugger is sensible family transport, cleverly packaged. If maximum interior space is your top priority in a mid-size estate, look no further.
