As we mentioned, Kia has been producing the Sportage since 1993, with the first generation based on a Mazda Bongo platform. This was made possible due to Kia’s partnership with Ford and Mazda at the time. The technology provided by the two automakers was complemented by Kia’s inexpensive manufacturing facilities.

You might be interested to know that from 1995 to 1998, the Sportage was built in Germany by Karmann. This was exclusive to the German market, while the South Korean units were sold to the rest of the world. In 1997, the Sportage became the world’s first production vehicle to come equipped with a knee airbag.

It wasn’t exactly a success from the get-go, as the first-generation Sportage suffered from low sales, especially in its home market. The vehicle even scored a dismal one star out of five in crash tests done by the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme or ANCAP. This was due to the seatbelts failing and the vehicle’s structure collapsing. Kia eventually withdrew the Sportage from the South Korean market in 2002.

But all things do get better with time. Fortunately, Kia has learned from its shortcomings, improving and refining the Sportage across the four generations that followed. The carmaker retained the gasoline and diesel options yet changed everything else. Beginning with the second generation, the Sportage began to share its platform with the Hyundai Tucson. While this removed the original Sportage’s off-road capability, it also improved passenger comfort and handling.
The Sportage also made remarkable strides in reliability and safety. It topped the JD Power Survey in 2012, scoring five stars across all categories in terms of mechanical reliability and ownership costs. The United States Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it a Top Safety Pick, and scored five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests.

With the arrival of the fifth generation, the Sportage shows that it is catching up with the times. This is not only in terms of styling, but also in interior amenities, performance, and safety equipment.
Exterior

In terms of design, the new Sportage has no resemblance to the outgoing model. Kia is using a new design philosophy called Opposites United, which will influence the look on all of the company’s future models. The design is a collaboration of Kia’s design network, comprising branches in Korea, Germany, the U.S., and China.

For the first time since the first-generation model ended in 2002, the 2022 Sportage is available in short- and long-wheelbase versions. Lengths range from 4,515mm to 4,660mm, and customers can choose between 2,680mm and 2,755mm for the wheelbase. Both versions stand 1,865mm wide and 1,660mm high.

The 2022 Sportage could be the biggest iteration of the model so far, trumped only in terms of height by the second-generation model. Kia has also designated a European-spec Sportage that’s slightly smaller than the overseas version, with smaller dimensions and few visual differences.

At the front, the new Sportage updates the trademark tiger-nose fascia. A slimmer and sleeker intake floats above the massive grille. These are flanked on both sides by LED headlamp clusters, emphasized by large boomerang-daytime running lights. The new front bumper carries front proximity sensors, while LED fog lamps are recessed within the front corners. A subtle skid plate is also present.
Prominent chiseled lines define the profile on the new Sportage, enhancing the generous body cladding. The beltline gently rises from the A-pillar, heading into a slightly steeper angle going towards the D-pillar to frame the rear quarter window. At the rear, the angular LED tail lamps were somewhat inspired by those on the Kia EV6 electric crossover. Even the dynamic rear bumper features a prominent diffuser between the reflectors.

The 2022 Sportage comes with a range of alloy wheels sized at 17, 18, and 19 inches. All of them are offered in a range of designs, colors, and finishes.
Interior

The changes are no less dramatic on the interior of the new Sportage. An entirely new dashboard architecture dominates the cockpit. Kia says that the new cabin is bolder in terms of character while being both intuitive and innovative when it comes to technology.
High quality materials were used for the passenger space, with the front seats separated by an ergonomic center console. It serves as a storage bin and offers cupholders, as well as housing controls for configuring the operating system and shift-by-wire dial. Soft-touch switches on the high-end gloss black surface are easily accessible to the front occupants.
