The Subaru Legacy stands as a testament to the humble sedan in a world growing ever more crowded with crossovers and SUVs.

The Subaru Legacy doesn’t have a rear liftgate or enough ground clearance to go off-roading, but it does have all-wheel drive, plenty of legroom, and—best of all—the nimble handling of a sedan.

Subaru has made its mark thanks to wagons and crossovers, but the Legacy proves it can still make a good sedan, too. The boxer 4-cylinder engine under the hood of most Legacies produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, run through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) to all-wheel drive. It’s good enough to make the Legacy quick around town, but anyone hoping to drop the hammer on the highway will want the 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder in Legacy XT trims. That engine’s 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque put the Legacy on the cusp of sport-sedan territory.

Inside, there’s plenty of cabin space both in the front seat and in the backseat. Up front, the 11.6-inch touchscreen runs Subaru Starlink, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, although George Kennedy found its vertical orientation frustrating, and too many simple controls are buried in the system’s submenus.

Pricing for the Legacy starts at an extremely appealing $22,745 and rises to the Touring XT’s $35,895 MSRP.
