Maize farmers in Ntabankulu in the Eastern Cape say the severe drought has damaged hundreds of hectares of maize and other crops. They fear that this will badly affect their produce this season, as sorghum and vegetables have withered. The Alfred Nzo region is leading the country in terms of a high poverty rate. The drought will have a negative impact on the livelihoods of rural communities that depend on subsistence farming.
