Within St. Gemma’s In-Patient Unit, there are now four nurse-led, end of life care beds.
The beds are for those patients at the end of life, with days or short weeks to live, where a decision has been made to discontinue further active treatment, including resuscitation. The patients accepted for admission to the end of life care beds will have been assessed and deemed to have care needs which do not require regular input from a doctor. This decision will have been reached by the patient's medical team in consultation with the patient, if appropriate, or with the family.
The beds offer the choice to patients whose wish is to die in a hospice and who do not have complex symptoms or specialist palliative care needs, but who require nursing care from highly trained nurses and healthcare assistants.
