As the non-shopper I am, I always stay away from Insadong. I didn’t know much about the neighborhood and assumed it was nothing more than simple souvenirs. Many influencers never shared anything that convinced me otherwise. Then, one day, friend and academic David Mason invited me for a walk through Insadong to share his knowledge of Insadong’s history and changes in recent decades. Suddenly everything made sense and my perspective of the neighborhood changed 180 degrees. I’m close to loving it now. Why? That’s too much to write down here, so I suggest you watch the Insadong video on YouTube! What I can tell you is that I now understand why there are so many artisans, galleries, tea houses, antique stores, ceramics, and cheap-*ss souvenirs. The history is fascinating!
