The “growth mindset” is often heralded as being a highly positive mode of thinking when it comes to personal development. We are told that a growth mindset can be the difference between success and failure.

This is applied to many areas of life, but that especially includes fitness. We are told to put in the work at the gym. To grind. To aim towards greatness. And we compare ourselves to people with incredible strength and fitness model physiques.

This can be useful for many people, to an extent. It can be motivating and help us to strive toward a goal. BUT it can also be destructive.

The problem comes when you begin to grow for the sake of growth. You’ve packed on a ton of muscle, so the only option is to pack on MORE, right? So, that you can be considered one of the best within the community. So that you can prove that you are capable of accomplishing great things.

But is that really why you started? And is it really what you want? When are you strong enough? Fit enough?

At some point, growth can become destructive. It can lead to obsession, to guilt, and to poor decisions.
