TOLEDO, OHIO (Nov. 10, 2023) - 49 years ago today -- Nov. 10, 1975 -- the 729-ft. Great Lakes ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald sank in heavy seas in lower Lake Superior. All 29 hands on board were lost...their bodies presumed to be still aboard the ship, which lies broken in two in 530 feet of icy cold water. To this day, opinions still differ as to why the "Mighty Fitz" went down. I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and served as a Great Lakes Tug Captain in my younger years...and of course, the Fitzgerald utilized Toledo as its home port. Plus, several of the Fitz's crew members lived in and around Toledo, including Capt. McSorley who lived near the University of Toledo with his wife. That said, the story of the Fitzgerald is quite personal to me.
