Catch Wrestling, which originated in Lancashire, was the first type of English folk wrestling to include a ground game. Other folk styles in general require a throw or fall, but not necessarily a pin. Catch was controversial in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as it was considered unseemly to continue grappling once the wrestlers had hit the floor.

By 1926, when this tournament was held, Catch had begun to decline in England. This competition was put on in Finsbury Park in London to try and revive interest. Yukio Tani “Pocket Hercules” was a guest of honour.
