The Robinson Helicopter Company has just released a new symmetrical horizontal stabilizer aka empennage for the R44 (FAA approved, EASA approval pending as of February 2024). The R44's new stabilizer is designed to reduce the potentially dangerous right-rolling tendency that occurs when the helicopter encounters a low-G flight condition. In this video, I join Robinson's experimental test pilot, Chris Smith, to discuss the design, price, and development process that led to the R44's updated empennage. I also take the controls to review how the R44's new stabilizer feels in flight for an average pilot. #micahflies
