The Battle of Evesham, fought on 4 August 1265 near the town of Evesham, saw Simon de Montfort, the powerful Earl of Leicester and leader of the rebellious barons, face off against Prince Edward, the future King Edward I, and his father King Henry III's forces. De Montfort, who had previously controlled the royal government, found himself on the defensive after the defection of key allies and the escape of Prince Edward.
