Led by the seasoned Australian Captain John Collins aboard HMAS Sydney, the Allied squadron, comprising British destroyers, found themselves thrust into a high-stakes encounter with the Italian 2nd Cruiser Division, commanded by Vice Admiral Ferdinando Casardi.
