▶ What is Nemawashi

Nemawashi is a Japanese term that refers to the process of gaining acceptance and preapproval for a proposal.

It's a critical step in the Lean Manufacturing process because it involves evaluating the idea and then the plan with management and stakeholders to get input, anticipate resistance, and align the proposed change with other perspectives and priorities in the organization.

▶ Why Nemawashi

The goal of Nemawashi is to get everyone on board with the proposal before it's presented for formal approval.

This is done by communicating the proposal to all relevant stakeholders and addressing any concerns or objections they may have.

By doing so, the proposal is more likely to be successful because everyone has had a chance to voice their opinions and provide feedback.

The term Nemawashi literally means "preparing the ground for planting" in Japanese.

This analogy is apt because just as a farmer must prepare the soil before planting seeds, a Lean Manufacturing team must prepare the organization before implementing a proposal. By doing so, the team increases the chances of success and avoids unnecessary resistance.

▶ Nemawashi Steps

The process of Nemawashi involves several steps.

1. First, the proposal must be clearly defined and communicated to all relevant stakeholders.

2. Next, the team must listen to feedback and address any concerns or objections that are raised.
This step is crucial because it allows the team to anticipate and address potential issues before they become major roadblocks.

3. Once all concerns have been addressed, the team can move on to the formal approval stage.
This is where the proposal is presented to management and stakeholders for sign-off on the final version of the proposal.

4. By this point, everyone should be on board with the proposal, and the approval process should be a mere formality.

▶ Conclusions

In conclusion, Nemawashi is an essential part of the Lean Manufacturing process because it ensures that proposals are thoroughly evaluated and approved by all relevant stakeholders before implementation.

By doing so, the team increases the chances of success and avoids unnecessary resistance.
