Young puppies need constant supervision in a controlled area. Crate training helps you house train your puppy fast. It also provides a safe place when you leave your puppy at home alone, or when you're not able to supervise your puppy.

In the crate, make sure you have comforting items for your puppy. It can be a baby blanket, a shirt, anything that your puppy can cuddle with and associate with their mother. When you bring your puppy home for the first time, it’s a good idea to bring a blanket with you and rub it on the puppy’s mother. Once you get home, your puppy will be comforted by the mother’s familiar scent on the blanket. Then place the blanket in the crate.

I also used a snuggly puppy with both Kai and Byrdie, and it really seems to work well, especially in the crate. These soft, cuddly little companions have an area that holds a heat pack and a pulsing heartbeat, reminding the puppy of being right beside mama. They really do help ease separation anxiety in my experience.

I'm not going to lie, the first week of crate training was tough, as you can see in this video. Byrdie howled every time we put her in the crate. We started with short amounts of time, and gradually increased it. Don't overdo it You don't want it to be a traumatic experience!

After one week of gradually increasing the time in the crate, Byrdie is much better and can stay in it now for 2 hours. Kai now goes in the crate anytime we need him to.

Keeping your puppy in a crate for appropriate amounts of time helps keep your puppy safe.
