See how to measure the cables on your boat in this video from Boats.net.

We’ll start by walking through your options here: universal replacement vs. an OEM direct replacement for your boat. Now, if you’re choosing a universal cable, you’ll need to also order the appropriate fittings for your application for both the engine and the control side of the cable.

We’re using Mercruiser OEM examples here, and John will walk you through the differences in the connections on the generation one and generation two cables. It’s essential that you order a cable with the correct connection so that it will work. They have different measurements on the ends as well as the length of the cable itself.

So what if you can’t see the stamp on your cable to choose a cable replacement for your boat? You’ll need a few measurements: first, from the control to the stern, then from that side of the stern to the centerline of the engine. Then you’ll need any distance in elevation you have in elevation and the distance from the centerline to the control point itself.

John will walk you through these measurements to see how you might need to take some additional considerations.
