This video shows step by step how to lubricate your throttle cables and your shift cables on a boat. You can use the same process to lubricate brake cables, or any other type of control cables on motorcycles, ATV's and other machines. If you have a stiff throttle cable or lever, or a stiff shift cable this could be the fix for you.

(00:01) today we're going to be reviewing and going over the process for lubricating your shift cables your throttle control cables or any other control cables on your boat the same process would work on motorcycles atvs anything that uses any sort of control cables what you want to do first is make sure that you've got the right equipment you need some cable lube something that is silicone-based rust proofings uh and and likewise is fine i like to use this um it's made with redline uh synthetic oil and it's specifically
(00:41) for lubing cables the other thing you want is a cable lube device you don't have to use one of these it makes it incredibly easy i'll show you how this works this is the cable luber version 3 from motion pro that is the part number there and what you want to look at on the package when you're purchasing them i'll put the links to the amazon listings for both of these in the description so that you can find them pretty easily if you've got um any sort of curiosities about how this works just keep watching i'll go through
(01:17) in detail how all of this functions now we're going to be working on the volvo penta motor this is the same for any motor motor inboard outboard uh stern drive as long as you've got shift cables and throttle control cables of some sort you need to lube them once a season once every year most people don't touch them in their entire lifetime of owning their boats and that's when you start getting the shift control and throttle control being a little tighter and a little tighter those cables start to degrade or there's
(01:51) internal rust in these sleeves and they'll start to get a little grabby and not move as freely so on this motor i'm going to show you the demonstration on this particular control cable that is the control cable for the throttle um as you can see the line goes up there wraps around and goes to the front of the boat uh and then from this lever here it attaches to another uh bracket that is attached to the throttle body and that's how your shift cables control different functions of your boat this one's for
(02:29) the throttle body and then there's another one that goes down down there and goes to the out drive and everything it controls the shifting which is uh forward reverse or neutral so for the purposes of this video i'm going to show you the demonstration on this cable since it's easier to get to that one i'm going to do afterward that's gonna be a little bit of a pain to get to so first thing we wanna do uh every shift cable depending on the boat and the motor is gonna be attached a little bit differently um what you
(03:01) wanna make sure you don't do uh so this is the adjustment the lock nut for the adjustment this collar here can be screwed in further out further this is already adjusted i don't want to mess with where the throttle cable is adjusted too so i'm going to do my best to leave that alone make sure whatever your adjustment point is if it's adjusted correctly and you don't have to do anything there don't mess with it make sure you don't move it and remember how it all goes together so for this particular motor i've got a
(03:35) c-clip uh not a c-clip a retaining clip here that goes through a hole i gotta straighten that out right there straighten it out and then pull it out from the top and the washer pops out and the cable will come out on other boats you may have a lock nut you may have some other sort of fastener that attaches and holds the in place things in place so i'm going to do that i'm going to remove this retaining clip pull it out take the washer make sure you don't lose them down in the engine bay anywhere set those aside and i'll show you what
