“SEBASTIAN PEREZ IN CUBA” / Spontaneous innovations, daily inventions, improvised repairs… Ressourcefulness is deeply anchored in the lives of Cubans. Already in the 1960s, to resist the blockade imposed by the United States, Commander Ernesto Guevara created “The National Association of Innovators and Rationalizers”, ANIR. This is organized “technological disobedience”. For the Cubans the machine does not exist; it is the sum of several possibilities. A washing machine is a motor, metal bars, pipes, electrical installations and many other things. Like surgeons who open bodies and perceive them as a set of organs, Cubans know how to dismantle, reinvent, reproduce, repair everything that comes before them.
In this documentary, Sebastian tours the country to meet these “socialists with a resourceful face”. The fishermen and their polystyrene rafts, Omar the beer bottle recycler, the king of the mecanics who gives a second lease of life to old American cars, the man who repairs tires with condoms and even the best surgeon in Havana who makes his own endoscopic devices.
On the eve of a new era, the pearl of the Antilles is still sailing in its own world...
