BMW has given the X6 a thorough update for 2024, and we got the chance to drive the new M60i version packing a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8. The X6 has always been an interesting mix - taking the utility of an SUV but giving it the sleek, coupe-like roofline of a sports car. For 2024, BMW has doubled down on that sporty personality with the high-performance M60i.

Straight-Line Thrills
Under the hood is BMW's familiar 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, producing a stout 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. That's enough muscle to propel this big, heavy SUV coupe to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds according to BMW. In our testing, we managed a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds, which is still hauling for a 5,200-pound vehicle.

The X6 M60i puts that power down smoothly thanks to its sophisticated xDrive all-wheel-drive system and quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. There's a delightful snarl from the V8 as revs climb, and upshifts are accompanied by crisp throttle blips on the overrun. The M60i is a real hoot to drive fast in a straight line.

Corners With Composure

Of course, straight lines are rarely the goal for driving enthusiasts. Thankfully, the X6 M60i has moves in the corners too. The adaptive M suspension keeps body motions nicely controlled, and steering is precise if a touch numb on center. The big SUV can carry impressive speeds through tight corners if you keep your inputs smooth.

Our main gripe is with the X6's significant weight and high center of gravity. It simply can't disguise its mass and high-riding driving position when pushing hard twisty roads. But for its segment, the M60i delivers a shockingly nimble and fun driving experience.

A Stylish But Compromised Cabin
Like the driving experience, the X6's cabin combines a mix of strengths and flaws. BMW's typical top-notch materials and build quality are all present and accounted for. The seats are all-day comfortable, and features like the curved glass displays and slick ambient lighting create an upscale, modern ambiance.

However, that trademark sloping roofline creates compromises in headroom and cargo space versus the more conventionally shaped X5. Rear headroom is quite tight for taller occupants. And while the power liftgate helps access the cargo area, space is limited compared to boxier SUV rivals.

Expensive But Well-Equipped
Starting at $94,595, the BMW X6 M60i demands a premium of about $20,000 over the inline-six X6 40i. But for that coin, you're getting luxury appointments like 16-way power front seats, the premium Harman Kardon audio system, remote start, a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats and steering wheel, and more.

If you want to load up with packages like the Parking Assistance or Driving Assistance Professional bundles, or add ventilated seats, the price climbs rapidly. A fully optioned X6 M60i can easily crest $110,000. That's serious money for what is ultimately still an imperfect compromise between SUV utility and coupe style.

But if you're seeking an outrageously quick yet relatively practical vehicle with head-turning style and handling poise, the 2024 BMW X6 M60i certainly fits the bill. It builds on the X6's original "SUV coupe" formula with even stronger performance and sportier demeanor. Just don't expect it to be as versatile as more conventional SUVs.
