The fundamental concept behind Activism is Medicine ("AIM") is that when we are confronted with existential global heating, climate change, and ecological collapse, the appropriate, rational, and healthy response—both at an individual and community level—is engagement in Climate Activism.
Climate Action is not limited to political action (although political action, including nonviolent civil resistance is extremely important); it can also involve community building, education about the environment and climate collapse, creating new democratic structures such as Citizen Assemblies, learning self-reliance, engaging in efforts to harden vulnerable communities, creating mental health programs that focus on the fear and harm created by climate collapse, etc. Climate activism serves as a form of personal and communal psychological, emotional, cultural, and community-based medicine, as well as a spiritual practice. This is something that we undeniably and urgently need and want.
Far too often, activists become disheartened and abandon their efforts due to our instinctive reactions to stress, which involve denying, suppressing, isolating, ignoring, or fleeing from it. Some of us have also sought to numb our pain with substances like drugs and alcohol, as well as other activities that provide quick bursts of dopamine. AIM offers education and inspiration, and presents alternative ways of living, dealing with the realities of our time, and for coexisting with each-other. Our intention and mission are to inform, open conversations, and guide activists away from common challenges such as emotional exhaustion and anxiety. We aim to equip climate activists with tools to manage and transform their stress into healthy emotional and spiritual connections, channeled into activism.
There is a growing wealth of evidence supporting these ideas, and the feedback from the training sessions we have conducted thus far has been extremely positive. You can explore this research here: https://www.activismismedicine.net/re...
In our videos, we discuss AIM concepts and how they relate to the needs of climate activists who are fighting for our survival. You can learn more about AIM by visiting https://www.activismismedicine.net/
