More than half of the world’s population growth by 2050 will be from 8 countries. The Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country on the list.

With the establishment of the Commission on Population 1969, the Philippines have a decades-long history of population planning. But this has proved challenging in a conservative, Catholic-majority country. A Reproductive Health Law languished for over a decade before being passed. As a result, until recently, the Philippines had one of the highest birth rates in Southeast Asia. In the meantime, cities were overcrowded, and infrastructure was stretched. Overpopulation was seen as an obstacle to socio-economic development.

However, in 2022 something surprising happened. Births per woman tumbled to 1.9, a 70-year low and a decline that exceeded expectations. Have population growth targets been achieved, and what will this mean for the Philippines?
