Hello everyone, in this pregnancy and hernia video series, let us see another scenario today where a lady who has undergone a hernia operation in the past five years back, she has undergone an operation for hernia is planning to get pregnant now. And the worries in her mind are, Sir, I underwent a hernia operation in the past. If I get pregnant now, my tummy is going to stretch. So is it going to make the Hernia operation failed? Will my hernia come back?Because I got pregnant second last time during the Hernia operation, a mesh was placed. So if I get pregnant now, will my pregnancy progress normally? Or will the mesh interfere with the growth of my baby? And with the progress of my pregnancy. These are very valid questions.

So before getting into this, we need to know a certain, information about this one is what type of surgery was done in the past. Was it Laparoscopic operation? Was it an open operation? And what sort of mesh was used? If at all there was a mesh placed during the previous surgery. There are various types of mesh synthetic mesh, absorbable mesh and where was the mesh placed and what was the indication and the location of the hernia during the previous operation.

1:13 - How to Lower Risk of Hernia Failure

Now, as you all know, pregnancy is the condition where the abdominal wall stretches, and that definitely adds to a small risk of a failure of a previous hernia repair. So how do we decrease this risk of the hernia failing during this pregnancy? Number one. The patient has to maintain a good abdominal wall tone prior to getting pregnant, so the preparation of pregnancy has to start much earlier, where a regular exercise and build up of a good abdominal wall tone is important because that can compensate for the stretch of the abdomen during the pregnancy. Second, a good balanced and high protein diet is very important to build the quality of the muscles and also the quality of the previous scar.

Third, good control of diabetes. If the patient is diabetic, avoiding smoking and avoiding obesity, the patient has to keep a control on the weight prior to getting pregnant because with the previous hernia repair in place, if the patient gains a lot of weight, that itself is a risk for the hernia repair to fail. Adding to that, the stretch of the pregnancy will double the risk of a hernia failure. The patient has to keep a good control on the on her weight prior to getting pregnant. For the patient has to inform her obstetrician or the doctor who is going to conduct a delivery that she has undergone a previous hernia repair. And if there was a mesh placed, she has to inform that to the doctor because it's important if the patient is being planned for a Caesarean operation, the doctor has to know that there is already a mesh in place, and where is the mesh located for the obstetrician to plan her operation.

2:53 - Conclusion

So when the patient takes these precautions generally, it is very safe to become pregnant following a previous hernia operation and the chance of recurrence or the failure of a hernia following pregnancy is drastically reduced.
