As electricians who drill holes for our wires all the time, it's important to know what you're allowed to drill through when it comes to beams and posts.

You must understand what LOAD-BEARING and NON-LOAD-BEARING means for what you're allowed to drill holes in for wires.

LOAD-BEARING means it is supporting the very heavy weight of the home or structure. It starts with your post, then the beam goes on top of the post. In order to drill through these, it's highly recommended to talk to your building engineer (not electrical engineer), as they often have to sign-off on certain decisions like this (so that they are to blame, not you!)

NON-LOAD-BEARING is for simple wall structures that are used to separate living areas, like a bedroom from a kitchen. They may provide some support, but would not be able to handle very heavy loads like beams and posts.

Make sure you know what you're allowed to drill through before just going for it.. it is not worth the risk!

(Maybe I can come out with a part 2 about rafters.. I forgot to mention that..)
