But at his death he had given away ninety percent of his wealth.
He followed his motto, which he enunciated in the Gospel of Wealth, "The man who dies so rich dies in disgrace," to the end.
Born in Scotland to a poor family of weavers, he emigrated to the United States of America with his family when he was 13 years old.
Over the next fifty years he rose through the ranks of labor and invested extensively until in 1901 he sold his Carnegie Steel Company in Pittsburgh to J. P. Morgan for $480 million and became the richest living American for a couple of years.
In "The Gospel of Wealth," Carnegie outlines his philosophy of philanthropy. He was aware that the United States at the end of the nineteenth century had produced a large number of self-made super-rich industrialists, like himself, and was concerned that they would squander their newfound wealth through extravagance and instead urges everyone to think about and assist those less fortunate than ourselves.
The Gospel of Wealth is essential reading for anyone interested in the views of one of the richest Americans who ever lived, who valued giving money away more than earning it.
Andrew Carnegie was one of America's richest people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After earning his millions, however, he spent much of the rest of his life using his wealth to help with large-scale philanthropy, with a focus on local libraries, world peace, education, and scientific research.
