This is northern Euljiro's area, pressed between the Cheonggyecheon stream and Euljiro 2 and 3ga streets. Although people know it as Euljiro, it’s a cluster of five smaller dongs. It’s believed that the origin of ‘Hipjiro’ originates on this side of the road. ‘Hipjiro’ is a term used to refer to the hipsterfication of Euljiro. Small and old factories are being repurposed and turned into hip places that attract many youngsters. Through its hipsterfication, Euljiro managed to keep its old charm. However, things are about to change if they haven’t already…

My visit to Northern Euljiro left me with an open mouth. Places I knew well and places I brought my foreign friends who visited Korea disappeared. The classic and well-known Euljiro back alleys are deserted. Merchants, metal workers, nuts and bolts shops….all gone. They are making places for brand-new buildings, and nothing is preserved. The Euljiro I knew is gone for good, at least on the northern side.

이곳은 청계천과 을지로 2가, 3가 사이에 끼어있는 을지로 북쪽 지역입니다. 사람들이 알고 있는 '을지로'는 다섯 개의 더 작은 동들이 모여있는 집합체입니다. '힙지로'의 기원이 여기 있는 작은 골목에서 유래되었다고도 하죠. '힙지로'는 을지로의 힙스터피케이션을 지칭할 때 사용되는 용어입니다. 작고 오래된 공장들은 많은 젊은이들을 끌어들이는 힙스터피케이션을 통해, 을지로의 매력을 유지할 수 있었습니다. 그러나, 적어도 을지로의 북쪽 지역은 더 이상 그 매력을 유지하지 못할 것 같습니다.

북을지로를 방문하니 입이 벌어졌습니다. 제가 한국을 방문한 외국인 친구들을 데리고 오던 곳도 사라졌습니다. 우리가 아는 을지로 뒷골목은 이제 텅텅 비었습니다. 상인, 금속공, 너트와 볼트 가게…. 모두 사라졌습니다. 새로 올라갈 건물들을 위한 공간을 만들고 있는데, 남아있는 것이 하나도 없습니다. 적어도 을지로의 북쪽 지역에서는 제가 알고 있던 을지로가 영원히 사라졌습니다.
