Dr. Shabir Ally says that historians have tried to look for earlier sources that may have influenced the Quran, and they've found them in infancy gospels which describe Jesus' childhood and youth, from the age of 12 to his early 30s. Historians say there is a correspondence between the Quran and the Infancy Gospel of Thomas or the Protoevangelium of James. Dr. Shabir points out that there are more differences than similarities, and the differences are fundamental.

He explains that even if, from a historical point of view, one might argue that there was a connection between the Quran and the infancy gospels, from a theological perspective, God guided the Prophet Muhammad, on whom be peace, to retain in the Quran only those elements from the previous stories which are compatible with the theology that the Quran is trying to expound. The Quran makes use of the knowledge the people already had or what they thought they knew in order to press home Quranic teachings. In the case of Jesus, the Quran teaches that Jesus is a prophet, a servant of God, and a messenger. He's a person that people should emulate and follow, but not the one whom we should worship.
