The ancient Maya created one the most sophisticated civilizations on Earth, but the discovery and colonization of the New World has resulted in suppression of the hemisphere’s indigenous cultures. Ironically, as December 21, 2012, approaches, the Maya may be distinguished on the world stage for credibility and accuracy. By deepening our understanding of the Maya, their calendars, cosmovision, and contemporary challenges, we may heighten our appreciation of their gifts to humanity, as well as our own sense of spiritual responsibility and destiny.
