For bow hunters, late September in Wisconsin can be unpredictable. Bucks are about ready to leave there bachelor groups and begin the season long search for does to breed, and the weather patterns are in constant disarray. This late September weekend was no exception. It was in the mid 70’s, but that didn’t stop me from getting up into a tree stand and giving myself a shot to harvest a mature white-tailed deer. I began my hunt in the evening over a clover food plot, but did not have any action. The next morning was no different. The next evening I hunted a new stand that we had put up in a white cedar swamp river bottom and was excited to see if it would produce any encounters. Sure enough at a little after six o’clock I heard a huge splash in the river and it was headed my way. Before long three does had circled around my stand and made their way into my sprinkled corn and apples, but they were very skittish. Before I could blink, a fourth deer appeared from beneath the cedars and this time it was a buck! Unfortunately it was a yearling fork horn and not a mature shooter. He scared off each doe before heading back into the timber. My goal of harvesting a mature white-tailed buck would have to be prolonged for yet another few weeks, but I remained determined. Enjoy my late September bow hunt in Wisconsin!
