It was early January and we were up north hoping to find some antlers that a buck may have dropped early in the shed hunting season. After the deer season comes to an end and the season of winter sets in, whitetail deer bucks go through a dramatic change. Because the mating season known as the rut is over, and bucks no longer need their antlers for defending their territory, they begin to use food energy for winter survival rather than producing antlers. A buck's testosterone and other hormone levels also drop with the changing seasons. A result of these changes is the eventual dropping of the buck's antlers that will soon be replaced by new antlers when growth resumes in the spring and through the end of summer. The dropped antlers are often looked for and seen as trophies to hunters that couldn't land the buck during the hunting season. They also can give hunters a look at what deer most likely made it through the hunting season. On this video we provide a few tips that may improve the success of finding shed antlers! The first tip is to wait to look for sheds until there is a decent amount of snow on the ground. This will make it very easy to find high traffic routes for whitetails in your area and will take you between feeding and bedding areas. These areas are common places where shed antlers may be found. Another tip is to use trail cameras for shed hunting. Capturing a picture of a buck with one antler is very valuable piece of information for shed hunting. The picture will tell you the exact date, time, and location of when a buck was ready to drop his antlers. Bucks usually drop both antlers within a small time period so you now have a specific starting point when looking for a big bucks sheds! Good luck shed hunting this year!
