Listen to the sounds of our ship moving through the pack ice as we head further north into the Arctic. Feel how remote it is and look out to the ice. This is the polar bears kingdom. Polar bears are marine mammals spending their lives on ice around the water. They typically live on sea ice hunting seals which is their primary source of food. They have a keen sense of smell living in this remote polar desert. They are excellent swimmers and can see well underwater. During the summer months when sea ice may drift further from land or be less accessible polar bears move onto islands and land to hunt for seals, bird eggs, reindeer, fish and cause an occasional walrus stampede possibly killing a calf to eat. They are great scavengers and locate walrus and whale carcasses that wash up on shore providing a great food source. Since hunting walrus was banned in 1952 it's allowed the walrus populations on Svalbard to grow providing other food for bears. Polar bears are powerful apex predators and as cute as they appear they are pretty fierce and will even eat other bears. They typically live a solitary life unless a female has cubs. Polar bears survive in the harshest most challenging environment on the planet. They are highly intelligent and will continue to evolve.
