The Lakeland was a passenger and automobile steamship that sank with possibly 40-50 new automobiles. There were 1924 and 1925 Nash and Kissel cars and one Rollin. On December 3, 1924 the Lakeland sprang a leak 15 miles east of the canal entrance and tried to make it back to shore but sank 9 miles out. The crew of 27 boarded lifeboats and were picked up. It is said when the stern hit the bottom first and the ship broke apart. The sinking was possibly foul play for an insurance payout but it was never proved.

Today the wreckage sits at just over 200 feet of water off Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. It's dark and full of monofilament lines and other hazards. I highly suggest NO SOLO diving on this site. Bring sheers that can cut metal. Cars are still parked inside the cargo holds and some piled up where the ship broke apart. One Kissel sitting just off the wreck parked on the lakebed. They are well preserved looking as if you could raise it up and drive it away. Another interesting sight is the cargo elevator towards the break. The ship is upright and mostly intact making it a great technical dive. To license footage contact [email protected] / Liquid Productions
