Psychiatry and mental health treatment tend to maintain a bad reputation compared to general health treatment. A non-trivial cross-section of society views mental health treatment as a kind of pseudoscience—a branch of medicine that is one big 'guess'.
Using the history of mental health treatment as a guide, I contend that the reason psychiatry has a bad reputation is because it has lagged behind general health treatment simply due to the logistical difficulty inherent in studying the brain. I also discuss current issues facing the field of mental health treatment, and how those issues can be addressed.
