China had sent me a set of LED Chandelier bulbs. I was intrigued because they are dimmable using existing wall dimmers, so I decided to try them out. At very first turning them on, they weren't absolutely awful. But the more and more I looked at it, I found that they were TERRIBLE, and no light except incandescent will ever do.

The first thing you must realize is that I am very sensitive to light. I can tell poor quality light right off the bat. I see flicker in LEDs. I see delay in LEDs when switched on. I can tell the color temperature difference as well. And being in LED lighting too long starts to give me ill effects. Naturally I will be more inclined to use my incandescents.

Now it's very hard to convey on video the difference, it has to be experienced in person, especially by someone as sensitive as myself. Besides the very-off color temperature, not to mention the fact that the color temperature does not warm up when the lights are dimmed, kills these off immediately for me. They simply are not suitable nor direct replacements for the original intent of these bulbs. On the other hand, with them installed in perhaps wall sconces in a hallway, they would probably be perfectly acceptable. "But they are filament LEDs, better than anything else" you'll say. Not even close. There's a huge difference, not to mention the shadows that the filaments cause with each other.

The absolute final nail in the coffin is the same problem that they have NEVER solved with ANY LED bulbs. The light is DIRECTIONAL. In this fixture, the bulbs burn base down, therefore pointing up to the ceiling. You can tell in the different frames in the video how much FULLER the incandescent light is, because it is OMNIDIRECTIONAL. The real kicker comes at the actual table there. The table is dark with the LEDs! Because all of the light goes up to the ceiling as they are directional. Yes, of course light is reflected back but it's actually dark and dim at the table, with these bulbs at full brightness. Incandescents do not do that. They provide light in every direction, including down to the table's surface. The dim linearly. The color temperature warms up as they dim. They don't flicker. There is no delay. Incandescent solved every single problem that LEDs caused. And, they are fully recycleable, they are simply metal and glass. LED bulbs are considered e-waste, and must be dealt with accordingly. Look who's green now, treehuggers!

I would like to also reiterate that LED for indicator lights is excellent. LED for automotive use is also excellentm with slight exceptions. LED for general lighting is UNACCEPTABLE, except in certain, specific, particular circumstances. They are great in fixtures where people won't be spending much time. A hallway or stairwell. They work great for outside house lights. They might also be passable in a closet, should one have a light, or even possibly a garage or maybe even a half bathroom. Anywhere people aren't going to be spending inodinate amounts of time. But to replace general lighting? No way, ever! Incandescents for life!
