The BMW 5-Series has long been the quintessential sports luxury sedan, blending driving dynamics and premium amenities in a right-sized package. With the all-new 2024 model, BMW aims to solidify the 5er's position against newer rivals like the Genesis G80 and redesigned Mercedes E-Class. After spending a day hustling the latest 5-Series on the roads around Spartanburg, SC, we can confidently say BMW has delivered another class-leading luxury sport sedan.

Slick New Styling Inside and Out
While instantly recognizable as a 5-Series, the 2024 model gets a complete exterior redesign with cleaner surfacing and a more upright twin-kidney grille. The new look is handsome if a bit generic from some angles. Inside is where the updates shine, with a sleek curved display housing the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen running BMW's latest iDrive 8.5 software. Material quality is excellent, and the climate control vents are cleverly integrated into the dash design.

Power, Poise, and a Luscious Ride
We sampled the volume 530i xDrive model, packing a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-four and all-wheel drive. While down on power compared to the 540i's turbo inline-six, the four-pot offers enough grunt for most situations with a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission choice.

The 530i xDrive's real party trick is its impeccably tuned chassis. Exhibiting excellent body control with minimal lean in corners, the 5er still manages to soak up road imperfections with a plush, luxurious ride rivaling air suspensions from other brands. The steering is accurate if a bit numb on center, but BMW's rear-wheel bias for the xDrive system allows for entertaining tail-out antics when pushed.

Advanced but Not Autonomous
BMW packs the latest driver aids into the 2024 5-Series, including automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane keep assist as standard. Optional tech includes adaptive cruise control and BMW's "Highway Assistant" hands-free driving mode for divided highways. While impressive, the system requires more driver engagement than similar setups from GM, Ford, and Lucid.

Solid Value But Pricey At The Top
Pricing starts at $58,895 for the rear-drive 530i, with the xDrive model ringing in at $61,195. Our well-equipped tester with the M Sport package, premium audio, and other niceties crested $70,000 - a hefty sum for a four-cylinder luxury sedan. The inline-six 540i xDrive commands $65,895, while the upcoming plug-in hybrid 550e should start around $70k.

The Verdict: A Sports Sedan For The Luxury Set
While not quite as engaging as BMW sport sedans of old, the 2024 5-Series makes a compelling case as a premium luxury sedan with just enough driving verve to entertain enthusiasts. Its impeccable road manners, long list of tech features, and reasonably sized package should keep it at the head of the class against newer challengers from Mercedes, Genesis, and others. For those seeking a more convincing luxury experience than the 3 Series with a dash of BMW driving enjoyment, the new 5-Series perfectly splits the difference.
