Bariatric surgeon Sunil Bhoyrul talks about a flaw with electronic health records. As technology improves this flow of information for doctors and patients, could we be sacrificing some of the very definitions on why doctors become doctors in the first place? How can we breath life and compassion back into the medical practice?

Sunil Bhoyrul, MD, graduated from the University of Aberdeen before his surgical training at Stanford and UCSF. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the American College of Surgeons. Sunil is co-editor of one of the first textbooks in laparoscopic surgery, and author of numerous peer reviewed publications. He is Chief of General Surgery, and Medical Director for Bariatric Surgery at Scripps, and has operated on thousands of patients. He is a lifelong student of surgical excellence and the human spirit, and forever inspired by his wife Indu and sons Vikram and Gautam.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
