A man in China's Yunan province died while on his way back to the eastern Shandong province for workd on a chartered bus on Monday. He was tested to be positive for Hantavirus which provoked new interest in Hantavirus along with concern of outbreak in the context of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The mystery has been solved. Hantavirus is unlikely to cause pandemic. Reasons as follows.

Unlike COVID-19, the Hantavirus cannot spread from person to person. Instead of human spread, rodents are the main culprits of these cases. Hantamirus live their life cycle in rodents but apparently do no harm. The viruses multiply and shed in the rodents urine, feces and saliva.
Humans do not belong to the natural range of Hantavirus and infection occurs accidently via virus containing aerosolized rodent excretions such as urine, feces or saliva. People who live or work on close contact with infected rodents are at increased infection risk and the studies usually show higher percentage of seropositive individuals in such groups as compared with control subjects.

But, ther have been few exceptions (Just FEW) to this rule in South America. A rare few patients exhibited person to person transmission. It occured through human to human contact via bodily fluids or long term contact from one infected individual to a healthy person. This strain of Hantavirus was termed Andes virus which caused Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.

In addition, prevention of Hantavirus infection is lot easier. All you need to do is eliminate or minimize contact with rodents and its excreta. Since rodents and its excreta are visible, prevention is easy. While in case of coronavirus infection, transmission occurs through droplets and viruses present in surfaces which are not visible which makes its prevention difficult.

Thus, rodents being the main culprit and person to person transmission being a small percentage, pandemic of Hantavirus is unlikely.
