Make sure there is no fuel, fuel vapor, or other volatile liquids or vapors in the tanks. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Do not let accelerant get on your clothing. Keep your source accelerant (I used gasoline) far away from the fire. Do not hold your flame source with the same hand you apply accelerant with- designate a dedicated hand for each. Be safe.
