Charles F. McCarthy, WPAT Paterson, NJ 930 AM & 93.1 FM news. January 31, 1963. 6.30 and 7.30 a.m. broadcasts. Transferred from original studio reel tape (7.5 ips). McCarthy was a well-respected NBC newscaster and in 1944 reported the D-Day landings over NBC. His career included voice-over for news and documentary films for Metronome News, Fox Movietone, and Castle Films. With the advent of television, McCarthy provided play-by-play descriptions of baseball and basketball for NBC-TV. In addition to NBC, he worked with WOR and WABC. In February 1962, he joined WPAT as director of news and public affairs because he felt suburban radio was the wave of the future. In 1967, he moved to New Rochelle, NY and joined WVOX. He was known for his "unofficial reaction to the weather" and ending newscasts by offering listeners, "a top-notch day to you all." He died the day after he suffered a sudden stroke. He was 63 years old.
