Few cars in history have been as widely anticipated as the follow-up to the Land Rover Defender. Call it what you will – the mother of all SUVs, the daddy of utilitarian 4x4s – the fact remains, no off-roader has the same history or heritage as the British-built 90 and 110 wagon series. We’ve already seen the latter in Australia, and it’s had glowing reviews, but what of the former? Is it a lesser Defender just because there’s not as much of it? We’d argue the opposite, because Land Rover has managed to repackage a large-yet-compact go-anywhere 4WD into a premium (or luxury, if you have enough money) SUV with the strength and capability to make its original descendants proud, yet while still able to provide a special, quality urban-friendly experience. We’d consider a Defender 90 if you’re in the market for a BMW X3, Audi Q5 or Mercedes GLC. It’s that sophisticated. Here’s the L663-series 90 P300 petrol to whet your appetite.
