The year is 2003 and 8 years have passed between For All Mankind Season 3 and 4. The first episode of the fourth season has premiered on Apple TV+ and a lot has changed in the show's alternate timeline. The space race has given way to cooperation with the formation of the Mars 7 Alliance, and the focus has shifted to mining mineral-rich asteroids rather than pure exploration for the sake of discovery.

The older astronaut characters Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman), and Danielle Poole (Krys Marshall) are nearing the end of their careers. Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) is living an isolated life in hiding in Moscow. Kelly Baldwin's (Cynthy Wu) child that she was carrying on Mars is growing up, and Aleida Rosales (Coral Peña) is suffering from PTSD as a result of the Johnson Space Center bombing.
