SMILE stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction. Dr Graham Furness at Insight Eye Clinic, creates a tiny Lenticule (a disc shaped piece of corneal tissue) in each eye. This is done using the Zeiss Visumax laser. The lenticule is then removed. The thickness of the lenticule is determined by the strength of the patients prescription. The higher the prescription, the thicker the lenticule.

Once the lenticule is removed, the surface of the eye is subtly reshaped and allows light to enter the eye and refract properly onto the back of the eye (retina).

SMILE surgery is the newest keyhole style of laser eye surgery. Recovery is rapid, downtime is minimal with most people returning to work within 1-2 days and returning to driving in less than 24 hrs.
